Description
St Mathews Anglican/Episcopal Church is the oldest church building in existence in the commonwealth of The Bahamas. The foundation of St. Matthew’s Anglican (Episcopal) church was laid in 1800. Dedication was July 18, 1802. Sixteen years later (1816) this Steeple was erected and remains as it was built to this day. For a long time, the clock was one of only two reliable time pieces on The Island. On July 18, 2005 St. Matthew’s celebrated it’s 203rd year as the ‘oldest church’ in The Bahamas. . The church’s historical importance is magnified by an extensive burial ground that surrounds it. (Source: Bahamas Department of Archives)
